Parquet renovation:
what gives you more pleasure – the process or the result?
We like both! There is nothing more motivating than seeing the work moving forward and even better when we are happy with the result together with the client. Parquet renovation gives a room a huge makeover.
Here we restored a three-layer parquet floor in the historic centre of Riga. A charming building with a history and a future! The premises are designed for commercial use, so this three-layer parquet floor will feel most secure with a protective coat of varnish.
Parquet renovation
The first task is to clean the top layer of the parquet floor. Use a sander to carefully sand away the worn surface of the wooden floor. We use different grits of sandpaper, making sure that the entire surface of the floor is sanded equally well. The next step is to polish the floor. We polish it to a suitable matt finish so that the parquet is soft and smooth, but at the same time has good adhesion to the protective coating that we will lay in the next step. Next, we coat the cleaned parquet floor with primer and the floor is ready for varnishing! The final step is to varnish the floor and sand between coats. Why do we need interlining? Quite simply, as the varnish dries on the wood material, the wood “raises its hairs” and develops a small roughness that can easily be sanded away to keep the floor smooth and to avoid leaving unnecessary debris between the wood fibres when cleaning.
Parquet floor protection
Restoring parquet also means protecting it. Different materials can be used for this purpose. One of the most common options is to treat parquet with several coats of varnish. This gives the parquet a neat and well-groomed appearance, the floor is easy to clean and the parquet can be renewed after a longer period of time.
As the premises are intended for commercial purposes, it was recommended that the floor be treated with a high-wear lacquer, which we did. A water-based polyurethane lacquer will be the best solution for this floor.
After a job well done, the floor has regained its original lustre and will now be durable enough to welcome back your office workers and clients for a long time to come!
